Since the snow has been plentiful and the weather beautiful (in the back country, anyway), we've taken the opportunity to spend our weekends away from the big city getting some much-needed fresh air and relaxation.
Elkford, BC Good morning, Sunday! Maybe not the relaxation part so much, as skiing has been a large part of our winter activities, and I find it far from relaxing!
We've made a couple trips to Golden, BC so the group could ski Kicking Horse...while I stay warm in our house (the one we rent every time we go), and maybe take a walk around town while they're all skiing :) Evenings are mostly spent playing some form of cards, be it poker, euchre or go fish (for my benefit!), and eating some delicious meal that Leah usually has planned. This last trip I was able to venture out on day 2 and do a cross-country ski day with Leah and Karen. It was simply beautiful outside!! My lungs have never felt so clear from all that fresh, mountain air! The sun was shining and the sky was blue, and there were lots of people out taking advantage of the amazing nordic ski trails that Golden has to offer. I think I might have to purchase a pair of cross-country skis next season since we're going to be moving there! Since I don't downhill ski or snowboard well, this might be the better choice for me for winter sports.
This past weekend Duane, Kevan, Leah and I made a trip to Elkford, BC so the guys could photograph the Elkford Dogsled Races. Apparently it's a pretty big event; teams come from Whistler, Lake Louise, Elkford, and other places across North America! While the boys had tons of fun, Leah and I spent part of our Saturday afternoon just trying to keep warm! We headed out to the venue in the early afternoon, not knowing when things would end or when the boys would return. They had been snowmobiled out by a couple guys early in the morning to set up for the day, and we thought they'd be done relatively early since it was so cold! Not so. When we saw the snowmobiles coming in late afternoon, the drivers said the guys wanted to stay out until the very end...needless to say, Leah and I decided to head back to Kevan's parents' house instead of waiting for them.
On our walk back: It was too cold just standing around! We were only able to see the one heat leave, so it wasn't really as fun as we thought it might be. If you'd like to see the guys' photo results of the day, visit www.68photography.ca/blog OR www.68photo.ca/clients , the pictures were worth it! I'm glad the guys had fun!
I think we'll be staying around town for the next couple weekends (this weekend the guys had a wedding in Red Deer, and next weekend we're actually ATTENDING a wedding TOGETHER instead of ME going alone and Duane photographing it...what a concept!). Yay for Breanne and Chris!!
The next time we head out to the mountains again will be Family Day weekend for a trip to the Elk Lakes...cross-country ski in and out...what fun! Hopefully it'll be nice!
The weekends after that, it'll be back to our future home of Golden for some more skiing with friends on Kicking Horse! Oh how I love getting out of Calgary!
Ciao for now!
~K~
